50th Anniversary Launch

Growing in Grace – Reaching out with Love

Meadowbrook High School Students, Parents and Teachers

On Sunday, September 21, Meadowbrook United Church launched a year of special activities to commemorate her 50th anniversary under the theme “Growing in Grace – Reaching out with Love”. This special service was attended by members, adherents and friends who attend both the first and second services. It was an opportunity for celebration and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness to the mission and witness of Meadowbrook United Church in the Meadowbrook/ Havendale and wider community.

The main feature of the service was the launch of the Meadowbrook United Church Community Development Fund Rev. Raymond Cokewhich seeks to broaden the scope of its ministry in the surrounding community. This was done by the longest serving minister at Meadowbrook, Rev. Raymond Coke. He reminded the gathering of the times in the past when some projects appeared to be too formidable for the church to undertake but with sustained commitment to the vision and with God’s guidance, we were able to accomplish what appeared to be the unattainable. He encouraged the worshippers to again step out in faith in full support of the Community Development Fund.

Approximately 600 persons were in attendance, including specially invited guests, friends and well-wishers. The sanctuary was filled to capacity and overflow was accommodated in a tent erected outside. The special guest preacher was the Rev. Norbert Stephens from Webster Memorial United Church, who himself served as Associate Minister at Meadowbrook in the early 1990s. His reflection was one of challenge for us to be a spiritual church that knows its identity, vocation and mission.

Other highlights of the service included participation by the Anniversary Choir, ably directed by Rev. Dr. Ralph Hoyte (Scot’s Kirk United); the unveiling of the 50th anniversary banner and the cutting of the anniversary cake. A brief reflection on the journey of the church was shared by foundation member, Mrs. Monica Smith. The Junior Dance Ministry, fresh from their gold medal performances at the World Championship of the Performing Arts in California, also rendered an inspiring piece.
